Who is in the photo at right?

The little brown brindle is Annabelle, a four year old cairn terrier poodle mix. She loves swimming, hiking, chasing squirrels and believe it or not, paddle boarding (summer is her favorite season). The fluffy white dog is Bowie, our one year old blue merle sheltie. He loves snow shoeing, snow flake chasing, and snow eating (winter is his favorite season).

I’m Lisa Gardner, a novelist, specializing in crime thrillers, many of which have involved savvy dogs to help save the day.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Years ago, I gave up coffee for herbal tea. But the dogs will tell you some days it still takes caffeine to get through the afternoon. I like to stop by J-Town Deli, in Jackson, New Hampshire, which is dog friendly. Annabelle and Bowie run immediately to the front counter and wag their tails furiously until cookies are produced. I’m not sure the dogs even know or care I’m getting coffee. In their world, a stop at J-Town is all about them.

What's brewing?

Mocha latte. Chocolate and coffee all in one cup. Mmm…

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

They are all about the dog cookies. And Annabelle likes being fussed over by the staff and other customers. She’s a social butterfly. Bowie is less convinced. He takes his cookie, then hangs out with me.

How were you and your dogs united?

We found Annabelle through a friend who also had a cairn terrier. We were looking for a smaller dog, but still active and outdoorsy, given that we live in the mountains of New Hampshire. Annabelle is happy to spend her days hiking the mountains or swimming in the lake, and her nights snuggled up on the sofa.

As for Bowie, we’ve always loved shelties. Our first pair passed away two years ago, leaving a significant hole in our lives. We returned to the breeder where we got our first sheltie, Murphy, who will always be the great love of my life. Bowie is a completely different dog, but still a joy to have around. He’s a total goofball, which is a nice fit with Annabelle, who is much more dignified.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Our daughter named Annabelle, thinking she would be called Annie. But Annabelle is Annabelle. Somehow the longer name suits her. We got Bowie right after David Bowie died. Given his one blue eye, it seemed appropriate to name him in the singer’s honor. If you ask our thirteen-year old daughter, however, he was named after the knife; she doesn’t do seventies pop stars.

Do your dogs do more to help or hinder your writing?

Annabelle is a great writing companion, content to sleep at my feet.

Bowie is a youngster. As long as I’m just sitting there, surely I could throw a ball. I end having to bribe him with a chew bone if I want to get anything done. But writing is generally followed walking to work out plot problems. Bowie approves of that part of the process.

Have any actual dogs ever inspired dogs in your fiction?

My latest book, Right Behind You, features both a retired police dog, Luka, and a search dog, Molly. Luka is fictional, but Molly [photo right] is a real dog, a pit bull mix rescued by the Conway Area Humane Society. Abandoned and emaciated, Molly still managed to give birth to seven fat, healthy puppies and did an incredible job nursing them before finding her forever home with the shelter’s operations manager Deb Cameron. They are real heroes, deserving of a role tracking a spree killer in the wilds of Oregon.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Squirrel. Definitely squirrels, and we are surrounded by them!

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Ball. Bowie will fetch forever. Until Annabelle becomes frustrated, steals the ball from him and lays on it.

Who is each dog's best pet-pal?

Bowie worships the ground Annabelle walks on. Whatever she does, he does. Basically, he’s the annoying little brother, but he loves her so much, she puts up with him.

What is each dog's best quality?

Annabelle is a complete snuggle bug. She loves to sleep with her head on my lap, or curled up in a ball, tucked under my chin. There is no amount of snuggling that is too much.

Bowie is the best dog I’ve ever had off leash. He returns the moment he’s called, sits on a dime, will do whatever you want as long as you take him with you. He’s definitely a work dog—always looking to make sure the humans are happy and always ready for the next adventure.

If your dogs could change one thing about New Hampshirites, what would it be?

New Hampshire has mountains, lakes and tons of dog-friendly people and businesses. Nothing to change, other dogs should come visit.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

What is the secret to happiness?

Honestly, they greet each day, each moment with such enthusiasm. Being a moody writer type, I’d love to know their secret.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

Annbelle should be voiced by Kate Hudson, feminine, energetic, beautiful.

Kevin Hart would make an excellent Bowie. Big loveable goofball. Perfect!

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Start every day with a tail wag and cookies will follow!

No, Riley is a night snacker. (And, um, so is his owner.)

How were you and Riley united?

He was first introduced to my daughter, Rachel, by her third grade teacher who brought in a litter of puppies. It took one afternoon for her to convince us that we had to adopt Riley.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

Riley was a Scottish-sounding name and seemed to fit. Though he’s most often called Roo-Dog or simply, The Roo. He answers to anything if you have food.

Does Riley do more to help or hinder your writing?

He tries to be supportive by lying at my feet as I write. Normally, it’s nice but all bets are off on days when he snores.

Has Riley inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

You know, I was just thinking that I should have a dog in one of my books. I’m going to work on that!

What is Riley's best quality?

He doesn’t drool.

And, he dances with me.

Who is Riley's best pet-pal?

He gets along with our cat, Lola, but he’s most interested in the random butts of dogs in the neighborhood.

If Riley could change one thing about Arizonans, what would it be?

He would want them to be more clumsy and drop more food along the street and on the trails.

Brian Yansky & Merlin

Who is in the photo at right?

That’s Merlin, Sheepdog, 8 years old, and me--Brian Yansky, a writer of novels (mostly Young Adult) and a professor of writing at Austin Community College.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I write at home for a few hours most mornings, and Merlin is nearby to lend his support. I usually have two cups of coffee when I work.

What's brewing?

Just good old-fashioned Columbian or Costa Rican, medium roast. This is my working-day coffee. If I’m out and about, I’m partial to cappuccino.

Any treats for you or Merlin on this occasion?

One of us often has a dog biscuit or two and one of us sometimes has something sweet—cinnamon rolls would be the sweet of choice.

How were you and Merlin united?

Sheepdog Rescue. Merlin had had four homes in a little over a year. We were the fifth. In one of his homes, he was exiled because he kept carrying their small dog around in his mouth. No doubt he thought this was funny. He has a strange sense of humor.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

He had three or four names with his other owners. I think one was Buddy and another was Sam. Clearly these people did not understand the magic of Merlin. We did.

Does Merlin do more to help or hinder your writing?

He helps. Occasionally I think out loud and he always listens attentively. But the main way he helps is his love of walks. I do a lot of writing when I walk. I think about plots and characters and problems in the manuscript. I work them out. Merlin is always willing to encourage me to take a walk. A selfless act that I appreciate.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your published work?

I’ve had four dogs. None have yet managed to inspire dogs in my work. I fully intend to write a novel in the future that has a dog or dogs in it though. No doubt all my dogs will have some hand in inspiring the identity of those dogs.

Who is Merlin's best pet-pal?

Chaos, our cat, who he adores. She, being a cat, tolerates his adoration. Mostly.

What is Merlin's best quality?

His sense of humor. He makes me laugh.

If Merlin could change one thing about Texans, what would it be?

Austinites are Texans but they’re Austinites first. Capital of Weird.

I think Merlin wouldn’t change anything about Austin-Texans.

Meg McCarthy & Bolt and Nike

Who is in the photo at right?

I'm Meg McCarthy and these are my two shelties, Bolt and Nike. Nike is my oldest, he's 10 years old and has been retired from agility for the last few years (he's very much enjoying all the couch time now). Bolt is three and he is actively competing in agility -- he's been quite successful in his young life and we have many events we're looking forward to this year; coming up is in the near future is Westminster, Sheltie Nationals, AKC Nationals, and World Team Tryouts!

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Today is a bit of a different one for us. The shelties and I are crashing at my Dad’s house waiting out the blizzard that hit the Northeast. We are enjoying an afternoon cup after lots of shoveling, quad-riding through the snow, and much eating. The snow is still coming down quite hard.

What's brewing?

My go-to is always a home-brewed Starbucks with cream and sugar. Today it’s a house blend with caramel creamer. Nice and toasty beside the fireplace for sure!

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

They have been allowed lots of extra treats because of the snow storm… including the ever-coveted pizza bones (pizza crust).

How did Bolt and Nike get their names? Any aliases?

Nike was named after the sports brand-- which is from the Goddess of Victory-- though he assures everyone he's quite manly. He goes by Nike Nathaniel when he's in some sort of trouble, but luckily that only happens a couple times a week (okay, maybe a couple times a day). Bolt, on the other hand, got his name for the natural occurrence-- a name that's a bit too serious for this very goofy, happy dog. Though sometimes people think he's named for the Disney character and I don't mind that at all-- he's a superhero, after all. He goes by many nicknames, the most ridiculous of which is Bo-beast. Don't ask, because I don't know.

How were you and your dogs united?

Nike came in to my life when I was 15. I had worked all summer to pay for him, and had high hopes of what our agility career together would be. He was the only puppy of the litter and was going to be a bit over-sized, so the breeder wanted him to find the right person: luckily she thought I fit the bill. Bolt was a sort of unexpected puppy (the best sort) and came to me when I wasn't exactly sure I was ready for a new dog (I was). My long-time friend, Paulette Swartzendruber, had a litter of puppies planned from her awesome dog, Rush. I luckily lived close enough to her to be there the day they were born (and almost every day after that). She helped me pick out Bolt, and now that she's no longer with us, her spirit and memory lives on through him. He's become a very special dog to me.

Bolt and Nike are both agility dogs. What is each dog's proudest achievement in the sport?

Both Bolt and Nike have had many great achievements in agility. Nike's proudest moment was when he placed 1st at the AKC National agility championships in the International round-- we had worked so hard to make it to that point and it felt like such a moment of accomplishment for us. Along with that Nike earned his Master Agility Championship (MACH), attended several world team tryouts and two national championships. Bolt has been competing for just over two years but has achieved much. I haven't had a particular achievement with him that I am most proud of yet-- he's qualified for three World Team Tryouts, two National championships, has almost completed his MACH, and has many more events in the upcoming year. I see many proud achievements in our future.

Squirrel, postman, cat....?

None, actually. Both boys are a bit oblivious to those sorts of things. Though Bolt does enjoy running the fence and play bowing to horses.

Squeaky-toy, ball, stick...?

Nike's favorite would have to be the ball. Though he is definitely not a retriever, and most games of fetch become a game of Nike barking while I retrieve the ball myself. Squeaky toys are definitely Bolt's favorite. He usually chooses to begin incessant squeaking around 11pm every night when we've all settled in to bed. (There's a current embargo on any new squeakies entering the house per "Daddy"-- my fiancé, Joe).

What is your dogs' favorite outdoor destination?

Anywhere that allows for some hiking. We plan hiking trips all year long, and love to explore places we've never been before. We're planning on doing a day hike this spring/ summer to the Appalachians. That’s aside from the outdoor agility training we do when the weather cooperates, that is!

Who are Bolt and Nike's best pet-pals?

Bolt and Nike love their friends Sir Prize (a border collie), Jive (a sheltie), Aidan (a golden-mix) and the newest addition to our 'extended family', Seamus (also a sheltie) owned and loved by my good friends, Carolyn and Dee. We spend many weekends with them playing agility, hiking, having bonfires and going to the beach.

What is each dog's best quality?

Nike's best quality is his thoughtfulness. He's a sensitive dog (don't tell him) who would attach himself to my hip if he were able. I'd have to say that Bolt's best quality is his smile, and his unrivaled love of life. He has made me a better person, and has made me learn to appreciate the things I once took for granted-- he has put an entirely new perspective on the world.

If Bolt and Nike could change one thing about you, what would it be?

Probably the fact that I work a full-time job. They would much rather I be home all day with them.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Bolt and Nike could speak, which actors should do their voices?

I have a feeling Bolt would best be suited by someone like Ashton Kutcher. Especially after his role as Kelso on That’s 70’s Show. Nike, on the other hand, seems more suited to have someone like Patrick Stewart as his voice—a more refined, mature sort of character for my older boy.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Do you really think you’re protecting me from the hair dryer/ shovel/ broom/ vacuum, etc?

What advice would Bolt and Nike give if asked?

Nike and Bolt would certainly say that more cookies would fix whatever was broken. That, or nothing a few barks and spins couldn’t solve.

Shannon FitzGerald & Sienna

Who is in the photo at right?

Shannon FitzGerald, I’m a producer for Tokala Studios – we create video biographies for people and pets. I also have a blog where I write about dog training and other things. With me is my pal Sienna. Sienna is a Sheltie mix (I think), she’s seven years old and my best buddy.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Just a regular weekday morning, getting back into the swing of things after the holidays.

What's brewing?

Trader Joe’s French Roast, latte style with lots of cream, sugar and vanilla.

Any treats for you or Sienna on this occasion?

Homemade bread with butter and jam for me, and a Greenie for Sienna.

How did Sienna get her name? Any nicknames?

She’s named for her reddish-brown color – it’s a crayon. She also goes by Pup, Puppy, Puppers…see a theme here?

How were you and Sienna united?

It was fate, and I was the last to know. I wanted a dog, but didn’t think I could have one with my living situation at the time, so I was volunteering for a rescue group, handling dogs at adoption events. At this one event, the county animal control shelter was there with some of their dogs. I didn’t have a dog to handle at that moment, so I went over to visit with the county folks and their dogs – one of which was Sienna. She had just been spayed that morning and was still heavily drugged, so she was pretty much flat out asleep on the grass. “What’s wrong with your dog?” I asked her handler. An auspicious start…

Due to her being doped up, we didn’t really connect, nor did I fall in love with her there. What did happen was that I had a momentary vision of what would happen to this little red dog if nobody took her home – and I was told by (God, the universe, fate?) that in no uncertain terms, I was not allowed to let that happen. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before, nor has it since. I know when to listen to that voice, so I made it my mission to find her a home.

After the adoption event was over, I kept track of her at the shelter. I shared her photo with all of my friends, posted her on pet adoption sites, etc., but nobody came for her. Finally one of my friends agreed to foster her, so the day before she was to be euthanized, I went and got her. At that moment, she decided that she was my dog. My friend fostered, but every time I visited Sienna was over the moon to see me. I took her to see several potential families, and each and every person told me the same thing: “Boy, that dog sure loves you!”

I brought her to work with me, and one of my coworkers had some sage advice: “You know, every once in a lifetime you might find a dog like that. If you’re lucky.”

Well, I know when I’m beat. I talked my then roommate and her cats into letting the little red dog stay (it wasn’t difficult – they already loved her.) I finally allowed myself to love her back, since she was here to stay. And my life has never been the same since. I can’t even begin to imagine it without her.

You create video biographies for people and their pets. I enjoyed the one of Sienna at your site. Do you have other favorites that are available online?

We're just starting out, so we don't have a lot of samples yet. We have a pet memorial video here. And a personal history/biography video (of a person) here.

Who is Sienna's best pet-pal?

Sienna is more of a people person – dogs she merely tolerates. Also her best friend is every cat she ever met. Sadly, the cats don’t usually return the sentiment.

Where is Sienna's favorite outdoor destination?

She loves hiking in the mountains.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Ball, which took me two years to convince her was fun. She also loves her dumbbell (we train & compete in competition obedience trials.)

She’s very adaptable – when things are mellow she’s content to lay around and relax, but she’s also always ready to go on an adventure.

If Sienna could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

She would tell them to stop working so hard all the time, have some fun, chase some squirrels!

What was your life like before you ended up in the shelter? And how did you end up there? (She was an owner surrender, but I can’t begin to imagine how or why anyone would give up this dog.)

Laura & Lily

Who is in the photo at right?

Hello! My name is Laura and I am currently teaching kindergarten and first grade. Besides teaching, I also work on a site called TeachersPayTeachers and have a teaching blog where I share my experiences. Lily, my sweet sheltie-pomeranian is one year old. She is my pride and joy!

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I love to spend time walking Lily, taking a trip to Petsmart, or visiting her doggy friends which include an English mastiff and a pug. You know what else we love to do? Hang out on the couch. We are currently on the couch snuggling and playing since it is freezing rain outside!

What's brewing?

I don't drink coffee every day, but my go to is definitely Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks French Vanilla. I am currently drinking Lipton lemon tea with honey - soothing for my soul!

Any treats for you or Lily on this occasion?

Lily loves the Authority dog treats from Petsmart... they have chicken wrapped apples and sweet potatoes that she loves to take her time munching on.

How did Lily get her name? Any nicknames?

It took me and my boyfriend Mike a little bit to think of the perfect name for Lily because we couldn't agree on one! I tend to go with more cutesy names... but when I suggested Lily, it just seemed right. Mike agreed and it was set. (Laughs) I have tons of nicknames for her... Lulu, Boos, Lily pad, Mama, and so forth.

How were you and Lily united?

Lily was for sale at a local pet store... and I really did plan on adopting a puppy, but she just felt like ours. Mike really pushed for her, and the rest was history. I also knew Lily would be the perfect name because the girl who sold us Lily (who is now our friend) is named Liliana.

Has Lily ever visited your kindergarten class? If so, how did it go? If not, how do you think that might work out?

I wish! I want to bring her in at some point because the kids really want to meet her, but I haven't had the time slot to do that. I work about 25 minutes away, so I wouldn't be able to just quickly drop her off after a little bit and a whole day of school would be too long for her. I think it would work out fine... Lily would be very excited but nervous at the same time, but my kids are so respectful that they wouldn't scare her. She loves kids.

Who is Lily's best pet-pal?

As mentioned before, Lily has two best friends - a pug named Zoey and an English mastiff named Bear. Zoey is my parent's dog and she is sweet as can be. Lily will tease her and be a little too playful at times! And I know what you are thinking... an English mastiff?! The size difference is amazing [see photo right, from New Years] but they are the best of friends. Bear is a big sweetheart.

Where is Lily's favorite outdoor destination?

Lily loves the outdoors. She loves to run wildly through the grass for walks or jump into mounds and mounds of snow until I yell it's time to come inside. We often go for walks around a pond nearby and you can see the happiness in her face.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Lily is all about the squeaky toys! To get your attention, she will drop the toy in your lap and back up so you can throw it. If you aren't paying attention to her, she will squeak it so fast that you can't hear anything else.

She loves the crinkly soft toys as well (and so does mommy and daddy because they are quiet!) Lily loves the outdoors like I had mentioned, so she also loves bringing in sticks and rocks. She thinks she's funny.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Bear is our landlord's dog so he sees Lily a lot. When they are outside together, Bear will bark at people walking by our fence - Lily now does this as well and follows his lead. It's the cutest thing!

What is Lily's best quality?

Lily has so many amazing qualities but I think her best is that she is very smart and obedient. She knows so many different tricks and commands, and she will always stay by my side on or off a leash.

She is loving, caring, and very sensitive.

If Lily could change one thing about you, what would it be?

She would definitely wish that mommy was home more! I work so much that I try to spend as much precious time as I can with her. She is my biggest fan when I come home, and the saddest little peanut when I leave!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lily could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Lily is smart, energetic, caring, and funny... I think that she would have the voice of someone that had these characteristics - Mike suggested Anna (Kristen Bell) from Frozen! I think that's a great pick.

If Lily could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Wow, that's a tough one... I would maybe ask her to tell me a few things that would make her life that much better. I already spoil her and love her to pieces, but I would want her to communicate with me if she needed anything else.

Jennifer Robson & Ellie

Who is in the photo at right?

The human is me, Jennifer Robson, author of Somewhere in France. The canine is Ellie, my Polish Lowland Sheepdog. She’s four years old and only just beginning to grow out of her puppy years.

What’s the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We’re about to head out for a walk in the Junction neighborhood of Toronto, Canada, where I live with my husband and two young children, as well as Ellie and Sam the cat.

At the farthest point of our walk we’ll arrive at a great independent café called Crema. Ellie has to wait outside while I order, but then we sit together on their patio or, if the Polar Vortex is still raging, we hustle back home with me gulping down my coffee on the way.

What’s brewing?

I always order a decaf mocha when I’m at Crema. They use a really dark chocolate syrup, and not too much of it, so the end result tastes like a properly bittersweet mocha and not like melted candy bar.

Any treats for you or Ellie on this occasion?

If I’ve had a productive week I may treat myself to a pumpkin muffin. I usually have dog cookies in my pocket so she gets one or two, plus some water from a bowl the nice people at Crema keep for their visiting pooches.

How did your dog get her name? Any nicknames?

My children had been watching the movie Up just before we got the dog and wanted to call her Ellie after the character of Carl’s wife in the film. As for nicknames, the most frequently used is Barky Barkington, for reasons that are lamentably obvious.

How were you and Ellie united?

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are a rare breed in North America; the closest reputable breeder is in Quebec City, a ten-hour drive away. So we took the kids to visit the breeder – we made a weekend of it, as Quebec City is one of our favorite places in the world – and met Ellie’s parents and got a sense of the breed’s suitability for a house with young children. Ellie was born a few weeks later and as soon as she was old enough to leave her mom, my husband flew to Quebec and brought her home. My children still talk about the night Ellie came home to us.

Are there any dogs in your fiction that are inspired by your dog?

Not yet, but I do hope to include a sheepdog in one of my narratives eventually!

Does Ellie do more to help or hinder your writing?

I’d have to say she helps me, not only because she’s very patient while I’m working – she sleeps in a basket next to my desk – but also because she has a sixth sense as to when we’ve both had enough and need a walk to shake off the doldrums. As soon as she gets up I know it’s time for a break.

Where is Ellie’s favorite outdoor destination?

She absolutely adores my mother-in-law’s garden in the suburbs. It’s far bigger than our postage-stamp-size urban back yard, and it’s full of all sorts of interesting smells and places to dig. We spend a lot of time there in the summer, helping with the vegetables, and Ellie follows us around and gets completely covered in dirt. A dirty dog is a happy dog, after all.

Who is Ellie’s best pet-pal?

We have a lovely cat, Sam, [photo left] who is almost nine years old. He was rescued by my vet and given to us when he was about a year old. I’d say he’s the best-natured cat I’ve ever known, which means he puts up with Ellie’s determined attempts to play with him and groom him without ever getting upset (or only rarely losing his cool).

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Although she loves her tennis balls, I would lean toward squeaky toy. She has several no-stuffing toys that look alarmingly like road kill, and she loves to drag them around and chew on their squeaky bits. There’s Mr. Raccoon, Mr. Fox and Mr. Skunk. I’m not sure why we call them “Mister” – perhaps because they’re her boy toys?

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Well, she hates squirrels with a passion – you only have to say the word and she runs for the back yard, barking at full volume. But she absolutely loathes the postman and all of his compatriots (the guys from FedEx and UPS, the woman who delivers flyers, etc). I’ve taken to putting her in her pen for fifteen minutes or so when the postman starts heading up the block. She still barks, but at least she’s not lunging at the front window like an especially demented reincarnation of Cujo.

What is Ellie’s best quality?

Her absolute, unwavering devotion to the people she loves. She’s intensely wary of strangers, which is typical for her breed, and can come across as unfriendly if she doesn’t know you. But for the circle of people she knows and loves she’s the most affectionate dog imaginable.

If Ellie could change one thing about you, what would it be?

She’d definitely make me more generous at mealtimes. Her breed can easily put on weight, so we have to be quite vigilant about treats, people food and portion sizes. If I go into the kitchen, Ellie is right behind me – and if I drop anything on the floor that is edible, she is more than happy to clean it up!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Ellie could speak, which actor should do her voice?

I think it would be someone with a really warm and friendly demeanor. Perhaps Drew Barrymore?

If Ellie could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Faith McCune & Dayle and Alva

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Faith McCune, the author of a book titled Duffy’s World, Seeing the World through a Dog’s Eyes. Duffy opened my eyes to a whole new world of canine agility and, though he was too old to participate in this sport, his baby sister, Corrie, did. It was through this activity that I met Dayle and Alva, her Shetland Sheepdog, commonly called a Sheltie. Alva is a male, 9 years old, who happens to be deaf.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Corrie passed away suddenly in May, but I’ve kept in touch with all our dear friends in the agility world. Dayle and I decided to meet to celebrate the release of my book. Dayle and Alva achieved their big milestone, too. A championship for Alva! This is a very special feat for any of our dogs, but especially sweet for them. Most dog owners take for granted being able to speak our commands to our dogs. It takes a lot of know-how and patience to do it only with hand signals. Competing in canine agility with a deaf dog is remarkable. They are amazing to watch!

What's brewing?

Dayle’s beverage of choice is Starbuck’s skinny peppermint mocha while mine is their black tea brew.

Any treats for you and Dayle and Alva on this occasion?

Dayle had an artisan veggie Panini, which she shared with Alva. I also brought some buffalo and blueberry treats for him.

How were Dayle and Alva united?

Dayle already had a deaf dog at home when a breeder called to see if Dayle wanted Alva. She was reluctant to take him at first, but when the breeder was unsuccessful trying to find him a home, she decided to take him.

How did Alva get his name? Any aliases?

Dayle and her husband like naming their dogs after scientists and inventors. Alva was named after Thomas Alva Edison, who also was partially deaf.

Did Dayle know your dogs?

I first met Dayle about five years ago at her very first agility trial. She never met Duffy. Since then, Alva and Corrie competed in many agility events together. Most of the time, we ended up at the same venues, then started sharing space together. We and a few others became quite a circle. We shared stories, laughter, snacks, and course strategies together. We made long-lasting friendships and looked forward to seeing each other from event to event. As the years passed, we shared victories and championships together as well.

Did Corrie do more to help or hinder your writing when you were working on Duffy's World'?

Corrie [photo right] was in constant attendance while I wrote my book. She and I enjoyed daily walks where ideas flowed in the fresh morning air. She’d drop toys or balls at my feet periodically to remind me to take breaks. She was never far from me though she enjoyed time with my husband as well. I could never resist her beautiful eyes and face that urged me to come out and play. This usually meant four or five breaks a day regardless of what I was doing.

Does Alva have a favorite place to go for outings?

Dayle and I are both agility junkies! Alva and Corrie just loved going places and having fun. All I’d have to say is, “wanna go?” and Corrie would turn herself inside out, yipping and whining in anticipation. She got so she’d know the difference between just me leaving and us going somewhere together by the sound of the cap on the tubes of skin lotion vs sunscreen. Seeing her friends was an added plus. More friends meant more treats! Alva also likes his chiropractor because he knows how good he feels after a session. He goes crazy when Dayle approaches the doctor’s driveway. Corrie enjoyed her sessions, too. When dogs compete, they’re actually athletes and we make sure they have treatments they need to keep them sound. Most of all, they both loved butt rubs—and they didn’t have to go anywhere for that!

What is Alva's best quality?

Alva is highly attentive to Dayle. She’s not quite sure if it’s his personality or because he’s deaf. He also aims to please and does his best to focus on her. When his mom is happy, he’s happy.

If Alva could change one thing about you and Dayle, what would it be?

Dayle said he’d probably say she’s too stingy with her treats. He also looks at me like a giant treat machine, hoping I have something to give him because his “mom” isn’t forthcoming with anything at the moment. He wishes we weren’t so wise to his begging ways.

If Alva could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Dayle would be interested in knowing what he really thought about his siblings. He has a Sheltie brother and a Papillon sister. Dayle feels he’d be happier just being a laid-back only dog. His brother, Hutch, has fear issues so he’s always on the alert, whereas Tesla, his sister is a 10-month old hell-on-wheels girl, primed for the agility ring.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Alva could speak, who should voice him? How about Corrie and Duffy--who would voice them?

I’ve actually thought about an animated movie starring Duffy and Corrie. Dayle thought Tom Hanks would be a good voice for Alva. He can be smart alecky, wise-cracking, and still serious. Duffy’s wild vocal swings would be suited to someone like Will Smith or, as Dayle suggested, Mike Myers. Corrie would probably do well with a younger voice like Dakota Fanning, sweet yet impish in the blink of an eye.

Diane Pagel & Tess, Nan, Rainey, and Maid

Who is in the photo at right?

This would be Tess and me, Diane Pagel. I have a day job as a Aerospace Engineer for the FAA: I certify large transport airplanes. My degree is EE. For my hobby I raise and train Border Collies for sheepdog and cowdog trials. I have been working with Border Collies for over 20 years and 17 years of that in the sheepdog venue. I have been doing USBCHA trials for 12 years.

Tess is almost 14 years old and my retired Open dog. She is the love of my life and the reason that I am in this sheepdog sport. I also have a sheep farm and raise sheep to train my dogs on and also for food.

In addition, I am a writer. I write for The Working Border Collie magazine and The Stockdog Journal. I am also writing material for a dog book. I also have a Border collie blog. The name of my kennel and training center is Deltabluez Stockdogs.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I often go to Starbucks for coffee and take my dogs. Since we live in a small town, I can sit outside with them and have coffee. The local folks love them and give them treats. My dogs love going for coffee as they get quite spoiled by everyone.

What's brewing?

My favorite coffee is Almond Latte Breve. I also drink a lot of tea. Green tea is my favorite.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

My dogs always get treats. They sit nicely and as a result they get treats. They especially love my mother. When she visits, she will feed them a whole bag of treats while we drink coffee or tea.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

DeltaBluez Tess is my retired Open dog and her nicknames are Tessie and Monkey. Monkey as she wraps her paws around your legs.

Nan is Beautiful and Nana-Banana.

Rainey [photo right] is Bug, Bunny or Petunia.

Maid is Maidie or Moo-Moo.

They all respond to “the girls.”

How were you and your dogs united?

We bought Tess when she was a pup to save her from being shot. The breeder was tired of the puppies and was going to shoot them as she was going on vacation. Next thing you know, she changed our lifestyle around and we got into sheepdog trialing. She made us learn to love life.

Nan was from a friend who had cancer and wanted her to have a good home. She wanted to make sure she would keep on trialing but have a good life.

Rainey is the daughter of Tess and when she was born, I knew she was going to stay.

I recently got Maid [photo left] as I needed another trial dog and had admired her for years. I never thought I would be able to get her but when the opportunity came up, I jumped at it.

Do your dogs have any non-canine pet-pals?

Well, Sarah the barn cat thinks the dogs are the best to rub against and then kick them out of their dog beds. They will often sit with her on the couch. Sarah grew up with the puppies so she rules them with an iron paw. They also adore Jeff “Getty” Freeman, who is my husband. He spoils them a lot and of course, my mother totally spoils them.

What is each dog's best quality?

Tess- the ability to carry me as I was learning how do the sheepdog trials and her capacity to love me.

Nan [photo right] - to teach me how to handle a dog and be calm.

Rainey- for showing me how to help a dog grow.

Maid- is showing me how to handle a strong dog and be a mentor.

All have the traits of love and forgiveness. They are my partners and after our sessions, they hold no grudges. I love them deeply. They all came in my life with a purpose and I have to honor that.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Katherine Hepburn and Sophia Loren.

They would be more of the older classic style actresses.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

Probably not to get too excited on the trial field, stay calm and focus more. When that happens, it is like magic.

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Anthea, I supervise children at school at lunch and train dogs. The dogs are, Ponto [photo below left], aged five (on the bed on floor), who is a mongrel girl including genes from labrador, bichon frise, sheltie, staffie, border collie and Irish setter. On my right is Percy, an Irish Setter girl, aged nine and Dylan who is eight is on my left and he is a Cocker Spaniel/Border Collie cross.

They all like chasing rabbits, are friends with the postman and live with my cat.

Percy - goofy and good at tricks.

Dylan - was a brilliant agility dog but retired now.

Lora Withnell & her dogs

Who is in the photo at right?

Hi, my name is Lora Withnell…that is me in the photo there on the right. I own a little slice of heaven, known as Rocking Dog Ranch and am part owner of a production company called Little Horse Mountain Productions. In the picture with me, are the dogs I generally travel with (starting on the bale and going left) Killiebrae Sally/6, L&M Bella/3; Grace/2; Nell/4; Gyp/2 and my red girl, Snook/9 (who is trying very hard to not get her photo taken).

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Since my dogs always come to work with me, I always have my first cup of coffee with them! This coffee was brought to me by my good friend, Adele. She regularly brings me coffee to drink during her lesson as she knows that will put me in a better frame of mind. This particular brew is from Dutch Brothers, black Americano. That cup that I am drinking out of is pretty special. It features my girl Nell, taken at a sheepdog trial by Vicki Close, working dog photographer extraordinaire!

Please tell us about Rocking Dog Ranch.

Rocking Dog Ranch started as a dream 7 years ago, when I took my rescue dog, Snook, out to a sheep ranch to be instinct tested. From there, I bought 10 acres, numerous sheep, and a guard llama, have taken more lessons and attended more clinics then I dare to confess. I teach lessons, train my own dogs to work sheep, and sheepdog trial as much as my schedule will allow. You can read about my adventures with my dogs. As the dream continues to unfolded, I joined into a partnership with my good friend and fellow dog trailer, Geri Byrne. Together we formed Little Horse Mountain Productions; a company that films, edits and brings stock dog training to DVD and on-line. Through both endeavors, I have met the most amazing people, most of which seem to drink coffee with their dogs!

How were you and your dogs united?

My first sheepdog, Snook, came from PNW Border Collie rescue. I owe her more than words can say. From there, all the other border collies that I work and trial were purchased for the task. Well, all except for Miss Gyp, who was my pick from a litter I bred out of my Nell.

How did your dogs get their names? Any nicknames?

All my dogs have middle names…..Sally Jane, Nellie Bellie, Bella Rosa, Gypsy Rose….Grace has yet to find her middle name…and any of them know they are in serious trouble if the last name gets used!

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

All my dogs would love to obsess about any cat….I don’t let them. Snook has a huge crush on my eldest son’s girlfriend. While Grace gets all goo goo eyed about my husband and my sons when they come home.

What is each dog's best quality?

I think each of my dog’s best quality is that they want to work sheep with me. Each is so very different, Nell is very talented but thinks she is smarter than me, Bella is very biddable and wants to please, Gyp is just beginning to blossom so every day is like the unwrapping of a gift and not knowing what I will find till I get there.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

The one thing my dogs have changed in me: I used to be a yeller. Snook has left me to my own yelling on numerous occasions and for that I am thankful. She, along with each of my other dogs, is a mirror into my soul. Very often, if things are not going as planned, all I have to do is look at myself…..I have had to learn to control my emotions and be very fair without holding a grudge. I think that “changing me” has been the hardest part of this journey of working dogs…but oh so worthwhile!

What is each dog's proudest moment?

I think what I am most proud of is that magical moment, whether it is on the trial field, home doing the sheep work I need to do, or helping other sheep ranchers in the area, when each of my dogs understands exactly what I am asking, and I trust them enough to get the job done. For me, that is the most amazing feeling of partnership and is what I strive for with each and every one of my girls.

Bree & Reilly and Denny

Who is in the photo at right?

Ah! A day in the park with my boys! This is Reilly (black head), Denny (red head) and myself Bree. Reilly is 4 years old, Denny is 7 months and me I am cough cough cough! Reilly and Denny are both AKC registered color headed white Shetland Sheepdogs or Shelties as we call them. Reilly is also a registered therapy dog and does agility. I hope to work with Denny so he will do the same as well.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Well actually I only drink tea – it’s an Aussie thing of which I am one even though I live in the USA now. It is kind of our daily ritual to go the park, sit by the lake, listen to the wind in the trees and the birds – the boys just enjoy a good sniffing session! It’s also a great place for some socialization – the boys get to meet lots of people and other doggies.

What's brewing?

Hot tea – I like the real stuff! PJ TIPS – Special Blend that I get from England. It is strong tea (the kind a spoon can stand up by itself in!) and I have it with a little 2% milk – not creamer!

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

I always have little training treats in my pocket – even a walk in the park can be a good place to practice sit, wait, recall, heel and so on. There are also bottles of water in the car - waiting at the end of our walk too - Reilly always loves a big drink at the end of some exploring!

How were you and your dogs united?

I got both Reilly and Denny from registered breeders. Reilly is from Wisconsin (a cheesehead, as my husband calls him) and Denny is from Kentucky. I got both of them at 10 weeks of age although I visited them a couple of times before picking them up to make sure we were right for each other.

How did your dogs get their names? Any nicknames?

Shelties are originally from the Shetland Islands so I wanted good Scottish names for them and of course they had to end in ‘Y’. Every dog I have ever owned in my life has had a name ending in "Y". Reilly means outgoing which is what he is – he is very laid back and just takes everything in his stride. Denny means “red headed one” and he is the total opposite, full of nervous energy and scared of everything but will also take on anything too. Reilly’s nickname is ‘the big dog’ because he is over sized for a Sheltie and Denny’s is ‘the honey badger’ because at times he can be totally fearless even though scared of something.

Do your dogs have a favorite place to go for walk?

By far the parks and around the lake although they are quite partial to the pet store or more precisely the treats they get at the pet store. We also check out the neighborhood on a weekly basis too.

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

The dreaded ninja squirrels! Reilly doesn’t like them at all and has been known to pull me off my feet when he takes off after one of them.

What is each dog's best quality?

Reilly is just such an amazing dog, he’s the ‘perfect’ dog. He is calm but confident, is happy doing his own thing, a joy to walk and be with. He is also my therapy dog – he just has such a calming presence. He’s not a cuddly dog though, he loves having his ears and back scratched but that is about it. He's extremely intuitive and always picks up on how I am feeling. He does like to stay close to our feet though. Denny is still developing his personality; he is skittish but likes being close. He will sit in a chair with me but doesn’t like being held. He also hates ‘change’ and he gets most upset if we move something from it’s ‘usual’ place.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

Hmmm..... I think that I could take them to the park every single day. I have RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and some days I just can’t manage a long walk or even a short one.

What is each dog's proudest / most embarrassing moment?

For Reilly – it was learning over twenty sign language moves. He can do many of his tricks with just the movement of my hands. In total he knows over 100 different tricks and is still learning Most embarrassing – I can’t think of any - (he is the perfect dog, afterall).

Denny’s proudest was learning to use his interactive dog toy in less than 5 minutes. (It said on the box it takes me a couple of days to figure it out - yeah sure!). He had the slides open and had pulled out the pegs to reach the treats in the blink of an eye. His most embarrassing is barfing up his breakfast whenever he get nervous.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should do their voices?

For Reilly – it would have to be Sean Connery, that calming, mellow Scottish accent! For Denny – it would almost have to Steve Urkel!!! "Did I do that?" - is Denny's catch cry when you see something he has 'found' and took outside.

If your dogs could each answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Just a simple question, I think: “Are dogs ticklish - there has to be some reason for all that foot movement when you scratch their bellies!”
