Megan Bannen & Brontë

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Megan Bannen, the author of The Bird and the Blade, and I’m hanging out with Brontë, a two-year-old female Beagle-ish mutt. Fun fact: It turns out that taking a selfie with Brontë is rather challenging.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Brontë waits patiently while I down 2.5 cups of coffee and write a few words before we head out the door for our morning walk around the neighborhood.

What's brewing?

Most days, it’s Aldi’s Fair Trade Medium. I set up the coffee pot the night before so that a perfect cup of coffee awaits me by the time I stumble out of bed at 5:00am.

Any treats for you or Brontë on this occasion?

One of our neighbors has a metal box full of dog treats at the end of their driveway. Sometimes, we fill up the box with our own treats to help out. It’s kind of like a Little Free Library, only with dog treats instead of books.

How were you and Brontë united?

Last spring, we lost our beloved Zora Neale Hurston, a shih tzu-poodle-maltese-ish mutt whom we adopted shortly after we were married. I was heartbroken and didn’t think I’d want another dog so soon thereafter, but 1.) a house without a dog is basically a house without a soul, and 2.) my sons get food everywhere, so I was in need of a doggy vacuum again. Thus, we adopted Brontë from the Great Plains SPCA last June.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

We’ve long since established that all Bannen pets must be bookish. As I mentioned earlier, our previous dog was Zora, and we also have two cats: Jane Austen and Thursday Next. When we adopted Brontë, the shelter was calling her “Lady,” and that would never do. She has striking eyes and that soulful hound dog look about her, clearly a dog who belongs to the windswept moors. But she is also spunky and a bit stubborn. Brontë just seemed like the right fit for her. You can choose whichever Brontë sister you prefer. (Personally, I’m on Team Charlotte.)

Does Brontë do more to help or hinder your writing?

I’d say Brontë is helpful to my writing. She doesn’t bug me when I’m sitting at my computer, but she is always, always game for a walk, and walking helps me unsnarl plot problems and dream up new ideas.

Has Brontë inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Brontë has not, but Zora inspired the creation of a doggy character in a middle grade novel that will most likely never see the light of day. That fictional dog’s name was Rossetti, by the way.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Cat: She doesn’t pay much attention to cats. Except Thursday Next. She is not a fan of that particular cat.

Postman: I think she just wonders why this person never comes inside to pet her as is her right.

Squirrel: She has nearly ripped my arm off on multiple occasions and sent me tripping over the leash in her mad pursuit to kill them all.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Brontë enjoys a fake rawhide bone and her rope toys. She’s a huge fan of stuffed animals, but since she kills them very thoroughly (plus the occasional accent pillow) that is something we have given up on.

Where is Brontë's favorite outdoor destination?

She enjoys the occasional visit to the dog park. She’s also a big fan of escaping and running amok, dangerously close to a very busy intersection. So that’s awesome.

Who is Brontë's best pet-pal?

Penny, a Siberian Husky we frequently meet on our walks.

What is Brontë's best quality?

She is incredibly affectionate. We call her The Boneless Pile of Love.

If Brontë could change one thing about Kansas Citians, what would it be?

Pour a bunch of tax money on a robust public transportation system on both sides of the state line. And to all Americans, she has this to say: high speed rail, people!

If Brontë could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Why do you think jumping all over me is going to make me put on my shoes any faster or put the leash on you faster or get you on a walk any faster? Why??

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Brontë could speak, who should voice her?

Melissa McCarthy.

What advice would Brontë give if asked?

All you need is love … unless you’re a squirrel or a rabbit.

Zoe & Tina

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Zoe of Designsbyevergreen.com. I run a blog that focuses on anything and everything that makes a home more beautiful- from interior design and DIYs to fun ways to bond with the fam. Tina is a beagle/hound mix that we think is around 14, but she could be older.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Tina just got out of the vet hospital where she scared me to death- I almost lost her a few weeks ago. She’s finally feeling better and it was just cool enough to take her out a wee bit.

What's brewing?

I had a Cinnamon Dolce Latte from Starbucks. It’s not normally on the menu, so you have to ask for it and bat your eyelashes a little for them to make it. I swear it tastes like a cupcake!

Any treats for you or Tina on this occasion?

Tina has been promised peanut butter and toast after I finish this interview with you guys. She’ll probably start howling about it in 20.5 seconds to remind me.

How were you and Tina united?

I have only had her for less than a year. She lived at a wonderful, no-kill shelter called Hallie Hill in Hollywood, SC. She was there so long, they let her roam freely on the property. She was their mascot and greeting committee. We went to pick out a dog for my daughter there. She picked a big, fluffy dog named Ike and I ended up falling in love with Tina- so we brought two dogs home!

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

Tina came with her name, so we kept it so we would not confuse her. However, we quickly found out she is deaf, so I have many, many aliases for her. Tina Tootles is my favorite, but she is also “Boo-boo baby”, “lambchop”, “Shnookumsus”… it gets worse. Yes, worse! She doesn’t complain about the names like other members of my family do, so I just let ‘em roll!

Does Tina have any special duties at Evergreen HQ?

Tina is a lady of leisure in her twilight years. She basically sleeps through my workday at Evergreen.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

She sleeps through all of that- including thunder storms.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

She doesn’t understand toys or the use for them, but she loves my closet and picking out clothes for me. She also loves her drawer filled with her sweaters. She rummages through it (in winter time) and selects what she wants daily. She’s a bit of a clothes hound (pun intended).

Who is Tina's best pet-pal?

We have a cat named Linus that tries not to participate in any family functions, but he does rub across Tina’s face every morning. That is the extent of Linus’ relationship with anybody. She and my daughter’s dog ignore each other. She’s more of a people person.

What is Tina's best quality?

She loves to be loved.

If Tina could change one thing about South Carolinians, what would it be?

Well, we live in Charleston and manners are rather important here, especially at the table. Not much food falls for her. I think she would definitely change our table manners so she could get more scraps.

If Tina could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

“Should we get matching sweaters?” I’m pretty sure she would say yes.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Tina could speak, who should voice her?

Betty White. Tina often gets that blank look like “Rose” from the Golden Girls.

What advice would Tina give if asked?

Eat, Sleep, Love.

Colleen Shogan & Conan

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Colleen Shogan, and I’m a political scientist at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. I also write mystery novels. My dog is Conan, who is supposedly a beagle mix. He’s 5 ½ years old but he still thinks he’s a puppy. In the photo, we’re at our favorite vacation spot, the Outer Banks in Duck, North Carolina.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

On the weekends, Conan and I go for long runs. When we return home, I make myself a nice cup of coffee before sitting down to write. He knows the ritual and waits for me to retrieve my laptop and mug of java.

What's brewing?

Starbucks Guatemala Antigua is my favorite. We have a Keurig so each cup is fresh.

Any treats for you or Conan on this occasion?

Conan always gets something, like a Heartyhide chewy treat. It takes him a while to eat it, and when he’s done, he’s happy to snooze while I write.

How were you and Conan united?

We got him from “Lost Dog, Lost Cat” rescue in northern Virginia. My husband spotted him at the dog adoption event. He’d grown up with beagles and instantly liked him, especially his name!

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

He came with the name “Conan.” It fit him so well we didn’t dare change it. He also truly seemed to like it. Conan is a classic alpha dog – he’s the first to do anything and very self-confident.

Does Conan do more to help or hinder your writing?

If he wants attention during a weeknight, he will actually try to stop my writing. He’ll put a paw on my hand to prevent me from typing. But if he’s not antsy, he’s content to lie next to me while I work. In the summertime, he loves going outside on our deck with me while I write.

Has Conan inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Yes, Conan is the inspiration for the dog in my “Washington Whodunit” mystery series. His character’s name is Clarence. In the first book, Stabbing in the Senate, he played a small role. However, Clarence plays a much bigger and pivotal part in the sequel, Homicide in the House.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Rabbit, actually. It’s springtime and Conan is all about hunting them. Fox season is wrapping up and now it’s time for the rabbits.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

He loves to play ball outside. He chases, catches, chews. I must have bought him over a hundred tennis balls. They last for a few days and then he needs a new one.

Who is Conan's best pet-pal?

We participated in “Dogs on Deployment” last year and hosted a dog named Honey whose owner had to spend eight months in the Middle East for the Army. Conan could get a little jealous at times but in general, he liked playing outside with Honey and jogging in the mornings with her. She still comes to visit several weeks out of the year so Conan still gets to spend time with her.

What is Conan's best quality?

He’s loyal and quite affectionate. But he’s also extremely intelligent. I’ve never owned a dog as smart as Conan. We taught him a number of tricks the first couple of months we had him. We can tell him what to do and he understands our commands. Every once in a while, he doesn’t listen. But we know he understands!

If Conan could change one thing about North Virginians and Washingtonians, what would it be?

Less working, more time playing with dogs!

If Conan could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

“Is there anything you don’t like to eat?”

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Conan could speak, who should voice him?

Harrison Ford.

What advice would Conan give if asked?

Legalize fox hunting.

Paula Treick DeBoard & Baxter

Who is in the photo at right?

This is me, Paula Treick DeBoard, with my dog, Baxter. He’s a ten-year-old purebred beagle, and we’ve had him since he was six weeks old. His life is slightly more relaxed than mine. I write novels (my latest, The Drowning Girls, is now available) and teach writing at the University of California, Merced, which is a nice drive from where I live in Modesto.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

This is morning coffee before the world (or we) are fully awake. Usually we sit on the couch together and read the news while we’re getting it together for the day. My husband and I have another dog, LG—but she’s a late sleeper, so she’s not pictured here.

What's brewing?

Home brew! It wasn’t possible to hold both Baxter and my mug of coffee for this picture, but I’m drinking Tully’s Coffee, Breakfast Blend. It has to be seriously hot before I switch to iced coffee—I hate to water it down!

Any treats for you or Baxter on this occasion?

This is right before breakfast, so it’s just a morning snuggle. Baxter knows that in a few minutes, we’ll be going outside, and when we come inside, he’ll be fed, and then after another half hour or so, we’ll be on our morning walk. So he’s in his getting-ready-for-the-day phase here.

How were you and Baxter united?

Baxter was a gift from my in-laws, who had been listening to me talk about getting a dog for years. My sister-in-law had a friend with two beagles and a litter on the way, and I was promised my pick. I got to see them when they were just a few days old and a squirming mess of adorable puppiness, but I spotted the one for me immediately. The owners said I could come back to visit any time, but they seemed a bit surprised to see me take them up on that offer—I went back at least once a week to take pictures for six weeks. It was amazing to see how Baxter grew between visits.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

At the time, I had a student whose last name was Baxter, and that stuck in my head as a great name for a dog. I grew up with a beagle named Bailey, and sometimes I do confuse the two names. Baxter’s remarkably adaptable; he responds to his name, as well as Baxto (the way my niece pronounces his name) and Bax and Honey.

Does Baxter do more to help or hinder your writing?

He definitely helps. On our walks, I’m usually thinking my way through a story, so I use that time for brainstorming or working through a plot hole. Also, I tend to proofread everything I write out loud, with Baxter sitting next to me. He seems appreciative.

Have any actual dogs inspired the creation of fictional dogs in your books?

I’ve had dogs in each of my novels. In The Mourning Hours, the family adopted a dog named Kennel, who is completely loyal, but bears the marks of a previous abusive owner. In The Fragile World, the family has a basset hound named Heidi. And in The Drowning Girls, there’s a dog named Virgil who becomes a symbol of the way that things go wrong in the story. I love dogs, and I explore the intricacies of family life in my writing, so it seems natural to have a dog wandering through a scene.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Not cats so much anymore, although as a puppy, Baxter would chase after every cat he could (including the two in our house). Every day, without fail, he gives the postman a few ferocious howls. And we’ve only ever seen one squirrel in our neighborhood, but he’s a feisty little guy who has hung around for years. Baxter either doesn’t notice him or has made his peace with him at this point.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

He used to love his giant rope toy, but now he seems to have outgrown it. He will chew on any type of rawhide he can get his paws on, and he loves to dig through the bathroom trash. It’s not unusual to walk through the hallway and follow a trail of shredded Kleenex to find him.

Who is Baxter's best pet-pal?

Baxter has a little “sister,” LG, our adopted rat terrier. He likes her quite a lot, but she’s not the most friendly dog in general. He knows all the dogs in our neighborhood who are walked on a regular basis. His favorite is Howser, a terrier mix. Baxter can smell her from half a block away, and immediately starts whining to see her. Their exchange of deep sniffs is one of the highlights of his day.

What is Baxter's best quality?

He has the best temperament of any dog I know. He loves to be petted, and when I’m sitting on the couch, he’ll jump up right next to me. (My husband and I had this brief, idealistic fantasy that we wouldn’t allow pets on the furniture, but that went out the window with Baxter.) In the mornings, he’s up a few minutes before my alarm clock every day, nudging my with his wet nose. Once I’m up and we’ve cuddled, he starts on my husband. I think he just likes to have us around, and the feeling is mutual.

If Baxter could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

Baxter loves his daily walks, so I think he would encourage people to exercise with their dogs. We pass a lot of homes with dogs barking and whining behind fences, and I bet they would give just about anything to join us.

If Baxter could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

He’s getting a bit older now, and sometimes it takes him a while to find the right place to situate himself. I wish he could tell me when he was comfortable, or explain specifically what was bothering him. I hope we have a good, long time together ahead of us.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Baxter could speak, who should voice him?

That’s a tricky question, since he’s a medium-sized dog with a large-sized bark. I’ll have to give more thought to this, but my on-the-spot answer would be Morgan Freeman, for no other reasons than I love his voice, and there’s a certain amount of dignity and gravitas that matches Baxter’s character, too.

What advice would Baxter give if asked?

He would definitely tell me to relax. He’s got that down, and I’m wound somewhat tight.

Karen Odden & Rosy

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Karen Odden, freelance editor and writer; my Victorian mystery novel A Lady in the Smoke was just published as an e-book by Alibi. And this is Rosy. She’s a true beagle—one of the smaller, 13” variety—and we’re not sure how old she is because we got her as a rescue. The vet took a look at her teeth and guessed she was five; so Rosy is probably around twelve years old now. You can see the white of her muzzle. But she’s still spry! And she’s so darn cute that a few weeks ago, a stranger stopped me and asked if she could take a photo of Rosy for her grandchildren. Really.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Rosy and I have our daily routine. The mornings in Arizona are just stunning—in the 70s and breezy, for another few weeks—so we usually walk then. I have a Keurig, and after I get the kids off to school, I make some flavored coffee (hazelnut, pumpkin spice, or vanilla) and put it into my reusable mug. Then I say, “Rosy, do you want to go for a walk?” She bounds around, ears flapping. I say, “Paws,” and she rolls onto her back, so I can put on her harness. Coffee in my right hand, leash in my left, we head out for a three-mile walk that she knows by heart.

What's brewing?

My favorite fancy drink is an iced vanilla latte if I’m out, especially as it’s beginning to heat up in Arizona. But I usually just make myself my Keurig cuppa with milk and a bit of French Vanilla creamer in the morning.

Any treats for you or Rosy on this occasion?

Oh, yes. When we return, Rosy gets her Greenie Bone. If I forget, she follows me around until I get the message.

How were you and Rosy united?

It was all my daughter Julia’s doing. I have never had a dog growing up, never had a roommate with a dog, never really understood the charm of dogs, although I have met some nice ones. But Julia Wanted A Dog. Being eight years old, she launched a clever and persistent campaign. First, she recruited her father to her cause. Next, she started taking quizzes with him on-line to find out what sort of dog would do well with our family. Then she started sending me pictures of cute beagles. Then my husband found out about BeagleFest. (Who knew there were enough beagles in Arizona for a three-day festival?!) Well, we went down to Tempe; Julia found the Beagle Rescue Society booth; and somehow I found myself with a clipboard that had papers on it, and a pen in my hand … and … well … Rosy was perfect. A week in, and I was charmed. She’d hike with me, curl up on the couch with us to watch TV, never howled annoyingly, and made my son Kyle feel like he was no longer the “baby” of the family. Kyle was five, and he’d measure her food very carefully and earnestly, to be sure she was getting just the right amount, as (he would soberly remind us) beagles have a tendency to gain weight. Yes, Rosy kicked out the walls of all our hearts to make a spot for herself.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

Rosy was the name she came with. No aliases. She would no doubt travel incognito because it’s more glamorous, except that she gets carsick.

Does Rosy do more to help or hinder your writing?

Oh, she definitely helps. She sits in the chair in my office and offers moral support. And I’m in the habit of working out scenes and characters’ back-stories while I walk. She’s a good listener.

Has Rosy inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Not yet, but she may!

Cat, postman, squirrel...road-runner?

She’ll bark when there’s someone at the front door, but it’s just a lot of noise. She’s a nose-down road-runner herself. Someone told me beagles are noses on four legs. It’s true. Sometimes she’s like one of those Iditarod dogs, nose to the ground, tearing along.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

She turns up her small black nose at them. They’re undignified.

Who is Rosy's best pet-pal?

Probably Henry, my friend Cindy’s dog. (In the photo [left], you see the pair of them suffering the indignity of Santa outfits in December. Their third friend, Benji, offered to call PETA on their behalf.) But Rosy has never really connected with other dogs. She’s more of a people dog.

What is Rosy's best quality?

She’s totally game. For hiking. For walking. For sitting on the couch. For following us from room to room. For trying new foods. Salmon is a current favorite.

If Rosy could change one thing about Arizonans, what would it be?

She probably wouldn’t change anything about Arizonans; but she’d change the heat of the summer pavement that burns her paws.

If Rosy could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

What makes you happiest?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Rosy could speak, who should voice her?

Abigail Breslin! Love her.

What advice would Rosy give if asked?

Wag more. Bark less. Pay attention to the people around you. Always be ready for a walk. Relish soft pillows. And don’t be afraid to show someone your underbelly. Usually they will rub it.

Tracy Walker & Skylar

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Tracy from Austin, Texas, by day I do PR and community outreach for a radio station and by night I write about the sweet things in life including my puppy and food!

Skylar is my sweet ‘puppy’, although she turns 9 this month she’ll always be my puppy. She’s a beagle and I adopted her 5 years ago from Austin’s Hound Rescue.

She’s my first dog as an adult. She has changed me in so many ways and I am forever grateful to her.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

What’s not to love about pancakes and coffee?

Skylar and I love to go to an Austin landmark eatery called Kerbey Lane Café. If you visit Austin you must be sure to visit Kerbey Lane (head to the original on the actual Kerbey Lane). They’re open 24/7 and serve breakfast all day and they have a dog friendly patio. Skylar’s a big fan of pancakes and so is mom!

So we frequently have coffee and pancakes at Kerbey Lane!

What's brewing?

I’m so old school. Mr. Coffee meets Gevalia. I don’t subscribe to the Gevalia club, although I once did. Ssshh don’t tell anyone.

I’m segueing into tea, yes chai tea. I’m moving towards giving up coffee and it’s a slow process. I’m not going down easy. There’s lots of kicking and screaming happening in our household.

When we’re grabbing coffee out, it’s regular coffee with hazelnut cream. The best.

Any treats for you or Skylar on this occasion?

On outings we always take a snack pack for Skylar with peanut butter cookies or cheese sticks (a doggie treat)…all natural of course.

We never leave home without her popup bowl.

How were you and Skylar united?

Austin’s Hound Rescue brought us together. She was my third try. After two dramatic failed attempts with other beagles they brought this older gal over to my house.

She immediately took to my side while walking. Of course trained already, the girl was mild and easy going. Just like me.

The more we’ve been around each other I’ve discovered we’re more alike than I realized. We’re both head strong. Stubborn actually. Skylar likes things her way, and well, so do I. Either she can’t hear or pretends not to hear. And I can’t hear. Not as well as I used to. Maybe it’s too many concert promotions that I’ve been a part of.

Even at her age and mine for that matter, we’re both athletic and love to run sprints.

She’s got a set of wheels on her and so do I. Mine are from years of teaching dance and fitness classes as a hobby. Hers are genetic.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

I adopted Skylar and kept her original name. At first, I was disappointed she didn’t have a ‘normal doggie name’.

Weeks passed and I realized why in the world would I have wanted to change her name? She’s perfect in every sense. She’s more than I could have ever have hopped for in a dog, in a companion, in a friend or a confidant.

I love her just the way she is. She’s precious in every way, just like me. This is one of the greatest things Skylar has taught me.

Skylar has so many nick names it’s a wonder she’s not confused all the time.

“Baby Bug”, cause she’s a love bug, a snuggle bug all in one!

“Biddles”, cause one day I combined two terms of endearment, Little & Bug somehow came out Biddles.

Does Skylar have a role at your blog's headquarters?

Skylar’s my co-pilot in every thing. She’s the head of creativity and actively participates in the imaginative brainstorming process. Many times she provides the content. Skylar is the ultimate networker among people and can be a real self promoter when she’s on her game.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Neither. She doesn’t chase anything. I’m not sure of the environment she was raised in. But she is kind, sweet, gentle, and she loves me.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Skylar is ‘no toy and all snuggle’. She’ll take a blankey, a pillow or mom’s goose down comforter any day.

Who is Skylar's best pet-pal?

Skylar’s her own girl. She keeps to herself and she likes it that way. Her best pal is the bunny in the yard. His name is Rockey. She’s happy go lucky even when he’s in the yard.

What is Skylar's best quality?

She is oh so affectionate. So sweet.

Where is Skylar's favorite outdoor destination?

Any restaurant with a patio, especially one that serves queso.

If Skylar could change one thing about you, what would it be?

She has changed so much in me by showing me who I really am; precious just as I am, lovable, and worth it.

I know she would like me to be around more. She would change my schedule. I work a full time job and teach fitness classes some evenings.

The ultimate situation would be a dog friendly work place. She’s great in the office, she’ll lay under my desk at my feet and snooze.

If Skylar could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

What was your childhood like? I’d love to know about her siblings and her living situation, what made her as she is today.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Skylar could speak, who should voice her?

Jody Foster. She’s tough, she stands on her own, is smart and in good shape. She’s reserved and not altogether outgoing but sweet as can be, gentle too.

She can be a force to reckoned with and relentless. She likes to know the lay of the land.

What advice would Skylar give if asked?

I will take care of you no matter what. Our God is a big God and He is capable of mighty things. There is a Heaven. So please don’t worry one second because worrying is useless and wasteful. Even when we part, we will be together again.

Lisa Edwards & Pinball

Who is in the photo at right?

I'm Lisa J. Edwards, professional dog trainer, behavioral consultant, and author.

Pinball is the orange and white dog next to me, and the smiling little boy is my son Indigo. I have been a nationally certified dog trainer and behavior consultant for almost 17 years. Five years ago, Pinball was born at one of the shelters where I am the lead trainer. I met him on the day he was born. His mama was a sweet small-medium mix dog and the rumor was the father was a beagle. The rumors are supported by Pinball’s beagle howl. Pinball has snuggled at my feet through the writing of two books to date.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

What's brewing? Any treats for you or Pinball on this occasion?

Every morning as I curl up in the red leather chair with a big bowl of French or Colombian roast—made strong, one-and-a-half scoops to every cup, Pinball comes down to hang out with me. The house is quiet because it’s before anyone else gets up and he sits close enough so I can scratch him behind the ears for a while and then he usually asks to go outside. He enjoys lying out on the deck in all weather, so he does need a treat lure to get him to come back in from outside.

When we learned about Pinball in 2012 you said his name fit his energy level. Has that changed much?

Pinball’s energy has become more moderated as he has matured, at least when inside the house unless one of his favorite people comes to visit or I come home. But, he remains the “pinball” energy machine when outside in the yard, zooming over rocks, fallen trees, and flying up the stairs on one side of the deck then over them into the grass on the other side as he continues his whirlwind zoom around the yard. My son loves to watch Pinball zooming from rock, to tree, and then digging in the ferns before he’s off again. And, Pinball seems invigorated by my son’s laughter.

Please tell us about your new book.

My new book is Please Don’t Bite the Baby, and Please Don’t Chase the Dogs, Keeping Our Kids and Our Dogs Safe and Happy Together is part-memoir and part training-tips. Each chapter is split into memoir followed by a tips section that details the skills, exercises and management techniques I used in that chapter as I balanced three complicated dogs and a newborn baby. My goal was to walk the reader through my quest to keep my son safe in a house with these three loving but issue-filled dogs, then offer pointers on what parents could do in their own home.

Cat, postman, squirrel...? Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

The cat is Pinball’s best animal buddy—they love each other and trust each other to the point that they snuggle together, and when they play, I occasionally interrupt the play wondering if it is too rough on the cat (one third Pinball’s size) but she than comes back (with a typical cat look of disdain) to see why he hasn’t followed her.

Pinball is a tug and chase dog. Part of him loves to be chased when he has something, and another part of him is made very anxious by that—hence his resource guarding. Tug is a game he would play until we all dropped from exhaustion. I usually drop first. He tugs appropriately, drops the toy when asked to and waits patiently to be presented with the toy again. I know he is really having fun when he actually lifts off the ground to become airborne a little bit creating his own canine carnival ride.

Who is Pinball's best pet-pal?

I am Pinball’s first best pal, then he has a couple doggie friends who set up play dates with him. He loves my son, and Auntie Jill is his second or third favorite human (I can’t know what order we all fall into). Pinball loves to be where my son, Indy is. Initially I had to manage the dogs to keep the newborn safe, but now I have to manage the three-year-old boy to keep the dog safe. I am sure it will balance out shortly.

Pinball’s two doggie housemates passed away last year and he was inconsolable for several months. He is getting used to being the only dog while we wait for the house to be safe enough from the long reach of the toddler for another dog to join us.

Where is Pinball's favorite outdoor destination?

There is a huge hole that Pinball has dug under a gigantic collection of ferns in the way back of the yard. He will frequently settle into that hole and fall asleep in all but rainy weather.

If Pinball could change one thing about New Yorkers, what would it be?

Pinball would love it if everyone, not just New Yorkers, would always ask before petting or approaching him or any dog. There was a time when he was a leery of strangers and while he is much more comfortable, he wants to be the one to make the invitation for people to pet him, not have them take the liberty.

If Pinball could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Was there any one thing that made you so anxious, or was this just something you were destined to be?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Pinball could speak, who should voice him?

I would have to say Jeff Goldblum because his quote from The Lost World, Jurassic Park, fits Pinball perfectly, “Oh, yeah. Oooh, ahhh, that’s how it always starts. Then later there’s running and screaming.”

What advice would Pinball give if asked?

Always think before you bite.

Greg Hartwich & Lady

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Greg Hartwich. I'm the artist behind Little Beagle Studio, my traditional art and graphic design business. Lady, my five year old dog, is the "little beagle."

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

This is a special occasion, because I don't get to see Lady a lot. Jacqui (my fiancée) and I recently moved to Upstate New York, and my little beagle stayed behind in Massachusetts with my parents and my younger sister. I was back in MA visiting my family, and I really liked the idea of spending some quality time with Lady by having coffee in my hometown's park.

What's brewing?

Straight black coffee from the Dunkin' Donuts down the street from my house. I like to keep it simple.

Any goodies to go with the coffee?

A bacon, egg and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich. Not health food, but one of my favorite ways to start the day.

How were you and Lady united?

Lady joined our family three years ago. She was a rescue from a shelter in Massachusetts. My parents, my sister and I visited Buddy Dog (a local animal shelter in Sudbury, MA), and out of all the dogs they had, Lady was the only one with whom we felt an instant connection. We were lucky to get her, because she was actually scheduled to be picked up by someone else. She ended up coming home with us when the other interested party was a no-show. Their loss, our gain.

Any treats for Lady on this occasion?

She loves chicken jerky, so I brought some along for her. Once, when we left her alone for a few hours, she ate an entire bag of this stuff. She was so happy! No regrets.

How did Lady get her name? Does she have any nicknames?

Like I said, Lady is a rescue dog, and we kept the name she came with. She's accumulated a few nicknames over the course of the three years that we've known her: my neighbor calls her "Lady Jane,“ and Jacqui and I call her ”Ladybug."

Please tell us about Little Beagle Studio.

Little Beagle Studio is a joint effort between myself and my fiancé, Jacqui. I make the art, she handles the marketing and website upkeep. I draw portraits of pets, design logos, and make other custom artwork. We are currently starting on our holiday season, and are ramping up with orders for custom portraits of dogs, cats and more. I take a few pictures from people who place orders on my website or email me directly about having a portrait of their beloved pet. I take those pictures and draw a portrait of their pet and have it enlarged to whatever size the customer wants. Then I mail them the original image hand drawn usually only 3x5 size and the enlarged size they want. What makes me unique is how small I draw the original drawing. I like to get a lot of small details into every image from those little things that make your pet unique, to texture and this is done by working very small.

What role does Lady play in your design work?

Lady is my muse. Whenever I run into a little artist's block, I'll draw her to get past it. I also do funny sketches of my little beagle for holidays, which I typically post on our Facebook page. One of my first pet portraits featured Lady, her face is part of our logo that's featured on business cards, stickers, our website... She's a huge part of my design work.

Tennis ball, stick, squeaky-toy...?

Lady gets really excited about any toy that 1. looks like an animal (fox, squirrel, skunk, etc.), and 2. has a plastic bottle inside it that she can crunch. Her favorite thing to do is to sprint around the house while chomping on her toys.

Postman, cat, squirrel...?

She loves people, so mailmen are no problem. Any stranger coming to our door gets a quiet, sweet, enthusiastic greeting. Apparently she hates rodents, though. Anytime she spots squirrels, rabbits or chipmunks, she has to chase them.

Where is Lady's favorite place for an outing?

Lady's favorite place to walk is at the state park in Ashland, MA. The scenery is beautiful, there are about five miles of trails to explore, and there are plenty of other dogs and people to socialize with.

Who is Lady's best pet-pal?

Lady's best pet-pal would have to be the next-door neighbor's dog. Darcy is a female black lab with lots of energy, and both her and Lady love to sprint around and roughhouse. They don't get to see each other a lot, so whenever they meet, sparks fly.

What is Lady's most endearing quality?

Lady's especially endearing because she's so loving. She used to be nervous around people, but that only lasted a few weeks after we got her. Nowadays, it seems like she hasn't met a person she doesn't like.

If Lady could change one thing about upstate New Yorkers, what would it be?

Lady likes to get to the park quickly, which is not a problem around Bostonians who drive fast. When she's visiting us out here, it takes longer to get start our walks because of the slow upstate New York drivers. If she could change that, she would! I think mostly Lady would love Upstate New York, it has more parks than where we lived in MA and she loves to go to parks and on long hiking trips.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lady could speak, who should voice her?

The consensus is Emma Stone, because she's sassy, which I suspect Lady secretly is as well.

If Lady could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

I was thinking I'd ask her this: "Who's your favorite, me or my dad?" However, I know the answer, it's my dad. She loves him more than anything. Oh well. I'm not sure what my question would be.

Chloe Tse & Clark Kent

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Chloe Tse, a journalist, co-founder of TheFeminismProject.com, a Gaysian activist forever fighting for what's right in this world.

Clark Kent, 10, is a male beagle who is having a hard time training his human. We both work to keep kibble in Clark's bowl.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Clark and I frequent Ideal Coffee in Kensington Market, downtown Toronto. It's just around the corner and the perfect way to start our days. Every time we go in, some new random stranger (fast friend) hangs out with him outside. We've had to do this since the incident in the summer when some random local awful person kidnapped him.

What's brewing?

We enjoy the americanos from Ideal — fixed with a little sweetener and some milk.

Any treats for you or Clark on this occasion?

Clark is far from deprived. He enjoys baked goods — of both the canine and human varieties. Today, the beagle consumed a pig's ear (and rather quickly).

How were you and Clark united?

Clark Kent, formerly Swiper, was a rescue from the Toronto Humane Society. He was recovering from disc replacement surgery on his neck and when we met, he was docile and calm. It was love at first sniff — I'd meant to adopt a cat a few months following my late cat, Lois Lane's death. But instead, I came home with a beagle who lives to outsmart me every day.

How did Clark get his name? Any aliases?

Clark Kent, the super beagle, was named after the leading male of the 90's drama Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman — like his late sister Lois Lane — who was named after Teri Hatcher's character. If we are in the dog park, Clark is one to pretend he doesn't know how name when he doesn't want to go home. So calling out "cookie", "pizza", "burger", "pleasecomeherenow" or "imleavingyouhereandgoinghome" is common.

Please tell about TheFeminismProject.com. Does Clark have a role in the project?

Clark Kent is a columnist at TheFeminismProject.com. He had a column called "Tails from the Doghouse" for Bell Media on TheLoop from 2013-2014. He's a human ally, socially aware and fights for equal rights. He's been seen in The Toronto Star, been involved in interviews on CP24 and Fairchild. He's a news hound.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

...he hates skateboards.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Clark enjoys sucking on his blanket over 'playing'. He'll just suck on his blanket for hours. He spent three seasons of Orange Is The New Black and every episodes of Orphan Black sucking on that blanket.

Who is Clark's best pet-pal?

Clark's best friend is Gus. He has a cousin called Pi. But lately he spends time with BB (Betty Blue).

What is Clark's best quality?

Clark is active, ambitious and always looking for the next adventure. He's kind, affectionate and doesn't discriminate. He's a really good listener and won't interrupt people when they're sharing. His emotionality is high and knows how to fill people's hearts with warmth. He's a decent dog, that Clark.

If Clark could change one thing about you, what would it be?

Nothing. Clark accepts people as they are. That's part of his charm. A few years ago, he demanded I take a job that affords me the opportunity to be at home with him more. Since, I've only accepted employment that allows me to work from home some of the week.

If Clark could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

I'd ask him to tell me exactly what he wants and needs from me and how I can accommodate him for the rest of his life. I just want Clark to be happy.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Clark could speak, who should voice him?

Clark has a father who currently lives in New York. In our heads, he has a nasally voice and would sound pretty nerdy. We'd find a really strong cartoon voice actor to get it right.

What advice would Clark give if asked?

Eat first, ask later. It's easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask permission. They always come around. Just be yourself. These are the types of things Clark stands by.

Ethan Bethune & Simon

Who is in the photo at right?

This is Simon. Our beagle mix. Or at least we think. On his last visit to the vet he weighed 20lbs....but he definitely has hound in there. I'm pretty sure he just thinks of the vet as a cool place to hang out and meet new animals. He is right around six months old.

My name is Ethan Bethune. I am a 26 year old writer of poetry, essays and short fiction. I live in Alabama.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We have coffee every morning. Sometimes I carry it with me on our walk.

What's brewing?

Southern Girl Coffee. Colombian blend. Although it really is time for the holiday stuff...like spiced this and peppermint that.

Any treats for you or Simon on this occasion?

Absolutely. Chocolate Cake for me, personally. And Simon is...well he's ignoring his milk bones and digging up earth worms.

How were you and Simon united?

Simon is a rescue dog. We found him with A New Leash On Life in Huntsville. He was left in a ditch when he was just a few weeks old. But he has been just fantastic.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

I remember they were calling him Silas... And my wife looked at me and said "he's not a Silas...look at those ears....he's a Simon."

So I guess that's how we got the name. He looked at us like "thank you." It just worked.

Does Simon do more to help or hinder your writing?

Oh, he helps tremendously. I was really nervous at first. I've always thought of having a cat. You know, because on TV writers have cats and stuff. But he gets me outside which is good for getting vitamin D and other things and he stays up with me. It's pretty great.

Has Simon inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Hmmm. I don't think so...maybe some werewolf creatures, definitely non fictional though. I started Beagle in the City. Which is weekly posts about life from his perspective, narrated by him. And it's been a big hit.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

It's weird. He loves the postman. Because he brings us all this cool stuff. We shop a lot online. But he goes crazy for squirrels and cats. He really tries to approach them and figure out what they're about.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

He collects things. Sticks, bark, big leaves and he loves squeaky toys. We got him a big Coon one and a Giraffe. He carries them around the house just making them squeak. I haven't seen him ignore anything really. He is just so enthusiastic...he was playing with a grub worm the other day.

Who is Simon's best pet-pal?

Probably our building's house cat. They have a strange relationship. Just following each other around...she watches him chase things.

What is Simon's best quality?

He's lazy...like an old hound dog. If we want to just lay around all day after walking him...he is totally fine with that... He even watches Buffy and old movies with us.

If Simon could change one thing about the good people of Alabama, what would it be?

Hehe...I'm fairly certain he would make everyone flash dance in the street and give him treats.

If Simon could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Where did all my socks go...?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Simon could speak, who should voice him?

Tom Hiddleston.

What advice would Simon give if asked?

Adopt don't shop. And cities...cities...come on...get dog parks.

Catherine Lloyd Burns & Shirley

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Catherine Lloyd Burns. I am an actress, a writer and a baker. Shirley is my dog. She is a dachshund, beagle, terrier mix. She is four years old. She is perfect.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Every morning Shirley and I wake up, snuggle, and have breakfast. Mine is fruit, yogurt, granola and coffee. Hers is dry fish, sweet potato, extra fiber, a splash of yogurt and a bowl of water. After breakfast we have a walk and some couch time before I for go to work.

What's brewing?

I am very into this medium roast, fair trade/organic Brazilian from the Meathook. It is so yummy. I make in a French press because I broke the last 4 Chemex pots and am not allowed to buy anymore Chemex pots according to my husband. Chemex is my favorite way to prepare coffee and it makes a wonderful cup of coffee. I miss my Chemex.

Any goodies to go with the coffee?

I have a bowl of fruit, at the moment it is grated apple, with some plain yogurt and granola sprinkled on top.

How were you and Shirley united?

Shirley and I met through Pet Finders. The on line dating site for people who need dogs and for dogs who need people.

Any treats for Shirley on this occasion?

Shirley will have a morning string bean or ten.

How did Shirley get her name? Does she have any nicknames?

Shirley was the only name we all agreed on. I wanted Fanny, my husband wanted Billie, and our daughter wanted to keep the name she already had which was Kessa. Her nickname is Mrs Wiggles because when she's excited to see you she wiggles towards you in the most singularly fantastic manner. If I've been away for work she is so wiggly when I come back that it looks like she might wiggle out of her spots.

How much--or how little--is Shirley like Cadbury, the dog in The Good, the Bad & the Beagle?

Funnily enough, I wrote the first draft before owning a dog. I was inspired by a ten year old girl I saw a long time ago. She seemed like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders as she said, "come on Cadbury" to her gorgeous beagle. When I got Shirley I was able to rewrite all the parts where the main character, Veronica, falls in love with her dog Cadbury. Now I had the vocabulary and the emotions to describe it much more accurately and personally. Everything Cadbury does in the book that is wonderful is based on Shirley.

Tennis ball, stick, squeaky-toy...?

Her favorite toy is a piece of fake fur in the shape of a small square that has a squeaker in it.

Postman, cat, squirrel...?

My neighbor Bill.

What is Shirley's most endearing quality?

Her ears and her face and her entire personality.

Who is Shirley's best pet-pal?

Nicky, the Pomeranian down the block.

Where is Shirley's favorite place for an outing?

Prospect Park during off leash time.

If Shirley could change one thing about Brooklynites, what would it be?

They know food.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Shirley could speak, who should voice her?

My friend Connie Shulman from Orange is the New Black.

If Shirley could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

What are you thinking about?

Visit Catherine Lloyd Burns's website.

Kevin Lee Jacobs & Lily

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Kevin Lee Jacobs, the creator of the food and lifestyle blog A Garden for the House. In my arms is Lily the Beagle, my 6 1/2-year-old best friend. She’s also my sous-chef and, on occasion, my taste-tester. A more enthusiastic kitchen-helper doesn’t exist.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Just now we’re enjoying the morning sunshine in the Herb Garden. Then it’s back to work! I’m writing a cook book that covers Brunch, Afternoon Tea, the Cocktail Hour, Dinner and Dessert.

What's brewing?

A Columbian blend, fortified with heavy cream. Skim milk is against my religion.

Any treats for you or Lily on this occasion?

A scone for me. Lily had boiled chicken and veggies for breakfast, so no treat for her until tea time.

Your blog, A Garden for the House, is very lively. Does Lily play much of a role in it?

Are you kidding? My blog has made Lily an internet star!

How were you and Lily united?

Well, it's a sad story with a happy ending. Six years ago she was abandoned by her former owner. Then she was struck by a car in front of our house. My partner and I saved her, and gave her the medical attention she needed. Then we adopted her.

Who is Lily's best pet-pal?

She has two -- our cats Tiger and Camille.

Where is Lily's favorite outdoor destination?

Any place where squirrels are present.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

She can’t resist a squeaky, stuffed hedgehog. She also loves rawhide bones.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Squirrels, definitely.

What is Lily's best quality?

Like all dogs, she gives love unconditionally. She’s also very musical -- you should hear her sing when the noon whistle blows. She matches the pitch!

If Lily could change one thing about New Yorkers, what would it be?

She likes New Yorkers just the way they are.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lily could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Bette Midler. Or maybe Vera Farmiga.

If Lily could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Like all dogs, Lily dreams when she sleeps. I'd love to know what, exactly, those dreams entail!

Savannah Miller & Lucy, Rufus, and Emma

Who is in the photo at right?

This is a photo of me, Savannah Miller, and my dog Lucy! I am a stay-at-home mom of 2 amazing little boys and the owner of The Simply Me blog. Lucy is a female black lab. She is 8 years old I got her in the summer of 2006 right after I graduated high school.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

My hubby and boys went to a Reading Phillies game so I had some alone time. I decided to talk Lucy for a walk and picnic.

What's brewing?

Seattle's Best Frozen coffee. It was hot outside when we had our coffee date I wanted something to cool down.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

Oreos for me and Beneful bake delights for Lucy.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Growing up I loved the show I Love Lucy. That is how Lucy got her name. Emma my beagle was named by my hubby and Rufus my puggle was named after the bear my hubby gave me for our first V-Day. My kids like playing with the bear so they decided to call their puppy Rufus. They do have some Aliases:

Lucy - Luey, LuLu Bell, Delilah and pretty girl.

Emma - Emma-Jemma.

Rufus - Rufeo.

How were you and your dogs united?

My younger brother came home with a black lab puppy and said our neighbor was given them away for free. I had just rescued Rocky from a shelter (passed away in 2012) and he needed a lot of work; he was abused, so I wasn't ready for another dog just yet. I did want to see the puppies though. My hubby and I (at the time just boyfriend and girlfriend) went to see them and this hyper little runt would not leave us alone. She jumped all over my hubby ran back and forth to get our attention. At the time her ears were to big for her body; she was adorable and just stole our hearts. I knew she had to come home with me!! The saying is true: dogs choose us. The best part was she was perfect for Rocky -- they were best friends and did everything together. She taught him to trust and love again.

My hubby got Emma from his dad. And after Rocky passed away my kiddos were heartbroken. It took us several months, but we decided that Rocky wouldn’t want us heartbroken, that he would want us to love another pup and give them a good home. So we got Rufus: he was the last pup left in his litter.

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

Squirrels -- my pups go nuts whenever one gets to close to the porch.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Squeaky toy.

Where do your dogs most like to head to for outings?

Lucy likes to swim so I take her to the lake and my dad's pool. Emma gets to hunt with my hubby, and Rufus spends his days playing fetch with my kids.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

My kids -- Lucy and Rufus adore them. Emma is happy as long as they leave her alone. And we do have a cat named Jekyll; they let her hang out with them, but only when she promises not to bat at their wagging tails or try to catch their tongues when they are panting.

What is each dog's best quality?

Lucy is loyal and makes everyone feel unconditionally loved.

Rufus is always happy and can make anyone laugh.

And Emma is the best behaved and the least hyper.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

Maybe that I always oversleep! They come into my room and poke me with their cold noses enough to let me know they want me up.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Emma is easiest she would be Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. She is always kinda sluggish and never in a rush. Eeyore’s voice would be perfect for her.

Lucy is silly and a bit hyper so I would pick Lisa Kudrow; she reminds me of Phoebe on Friends sometimes. Silly and lovable and always sounds happy when she talks.

And finally Rufus: as much as I love him I swear there isn't much going on in his head. When my hubby and I watch Game of Thrones I always say Hordor reminds me of Rufus. My kids disagree though: I asked them who should do his voice and they said Olaf from Frozen.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

I would make sure to ask if they are happy and feel loved.

Visit The Simply Me blog.

Nina Hoeberichts & Sammy

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Nina Hoeberichts, a recent marketing graduate and also a singer-songwriter! (You can find some of my songs on my blog).

Sammy is a female purebred beagle and she’s 9 years old.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

It’s a beautiful summer day and we’re celebrating vacation in our garden!

What's brewing?

I’m having a café latte brewed with Douwe Egberts coffee (famous Dutch coffee brand) with lots of milk foam!

Any treats for you or Sammy on this occasion?

Sammy is having a corncob – she loves to chew on those.

How did Sammy get her name? Any nicknames?

We got Sammy when she was 6 years old, so her name was already chosen of course. Her official name is ‘Sam’ but we always call her Sammy.

How were you and Sammy united?

We took Sammy in because acquaintances of us couldn’t care for her anymore. She quickly became a part of our family and stole our hearts!

As a singer-songwriter, has Sammy inspired any of your music?

Not yet! But I am planning to write a song about her....

Who is Sammy's best pet-pal?

Sammy is very social and all the other dogs love her in our neighborhood – she has many male suitors and she likes to flirt & play with all of them! Apart from that she also hangs out with Puma, my cat.

Where is Sammy's favorite outdoor destination?

Sammy loves the forest where she can smell all different kinds of scents!

She also loves running through tall grass.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Unfortunately, Sammy is not really into toys. She doesn’t really understand what to do with them!

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

The only thing Sammy likes to chase are flies – if there’s a fly in the room she will chase that fly until she catches it and eats it.

What is Sammy's best quality?

Sammy is a very friendly and social dog so she greets everyone she meets. She’s always happy & excited and she loves to cuddle (except when there’s food nearby).

If Sammy could change one thing about Belgians, what would it be?

Sammy is actually a Dutch beagle! She would probably want that they give her more food & cookies.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Sammy could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Hmm good question! I think someone quirky & original like Zooey Deschanel or Jennifer Lawrence.

If Sammy could answer only one question in Dutch or English, what would you ask her?

What are you thinking right now, Sammy?

Carol Lynch Williams & Olive and Loki

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Carol Lynch Williams. I write books for middle grade and young adult readers. My beagle is Olive. We got her 18 months ago, when she was a pup. And Loki is a visiting border collie that we may end up keeping as our own. He's about two.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

It's been cold and rainy and I know we're going ot be getting snow again. I always need something sweet on a bitter day. Not only that, my novel The Haven is coming out any moment. Gotta celebrate!

What's brewing?

Hot chocolate. Creamy, sweet, dollop of sweet whipped cream. Yum. I'll have a large, please.

Any treats for you or Olive and Loki on this occasion?

By now Olive has begged anything she get from anyone who will listen. She's pretty friendly. Loki is sitting next to me, patiently waiting. I'll share some of my bagel with cream cheese. Yup, you're seeing a fattening trend going on here. Cream. Cream cheese. Better throw some butter on there. Sweet. Yum.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

When Olive came to live with us, she was so tiny. We went through several names for her, and finally decided Olive because it just seemed right. Her nickname is Salty Dog. We got her from rescue. They thought she was a full-blown beagle, but nope. I think she has some chihauhau in her as she loves to burrow and she hasn't grown very large.

Loki is on loan from a friend who is out of town. He's a rescue dog as well. He started out one name, got the name Sirius (from Harry Potter) and then, when he was adopted a third time, he was named Loki after Thor's half brother. He's a fabulous dog. But he barks too much.

How were you and your dogs united?

The best dog in the world, Violet, was killed when she was hit by a car. We missed her terribly. Still do. Violet nipped at any of the boys she didn't like when they came to visit my daughters. One day my oldest daughter went to PetSmart and there she ran into the dog rescue people. She bought Olive, as a tiny puppy a day later.

Please tell us about your new novel, The Haven.

Shiloh lives at Haven Hospital and Halls, a school for the terminally ill. No one ever gets well. As memories of surgery, a stranger and odd events tap at her brain, Shiloh is approached by Gideon. He talks of rebellion. Gideon wants freedom for the Terminals. But Shiloh isn't sure she can do what needs to be done to help save herself and her schoolmates.

How do your dogs help--and hinder--your writing?

Loki knocks my hands out of the way when I try to type on the computer. He's pretty strong. He'll also lay his head on the keyboard. Things can get pretty spitty. I have to send him out. Olive sits in the chair behind me so she is warm and so am I.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your books?

There are animals in many of my novels. But Violet (the nipper) actually inspired the dog Thelma in Signed, Skye Harper, a book that comes out in June.

Squirrel, postman, cat....?

All three. Please. And children.

Who are Olive and Loki's best pet-pals?

Abbey, another rescue dog. Abbey is Olive's cousin. The three love each other and wrestle till I want to pull my hair out. Then they fall in odd places to rest until they have energy to wrestle and bark and nip and fight again.

What is each dog's best quality?

Olive loves to talk, loves people, loves to be petted, loves to be held. She also loves to eat.
Loki is a good guard dog, gives hugs when you come in after a long day and always looks likes he's smiling.

If Olive and Loki could change one thing about you, what would it be?

They would have me give them free access to whatever we are eating. And fridge privileges.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Olive and Loki could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Sandra Bullock for Olive. But she'd have to do some whining. And Loki. Paul Rudd.

If Olive and Loki could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Vets are saying you guys really don't have emotion. Do you? And can you tell me how to finish this novel?
